Investment perspective

Look beyond the investment story.

A practical way to connect a company’s growth assumptions with its ability to execute.

Understand what has to be true

An attractive opportunity usually rests on a set of assumptions about demand, margins, capital, and execution. Identify the assumptions that matter most and separate the evidence available today from expectations about the future.

Connect the numbers to the business

Ask how revenue is generated, what drives costs, and how growth affects cash requirements. A financial model is more useful when its assumptions can be traced to customers, contracts, operating capacity, and management decisions.

Assess the capacity to execute

Consider whether the organization has the leadership, people, systems, and time required for its plan. Identify capabilities that need to be added and include their cost and timing in the assessment.

Consider the ownership workload

An investment may require more than capital. Clarify the level of governance, advisory involvement, and operational support likely to be needed. The investor’s ability and willingness to provide that support should form part of the decision.

Define what you will monitor

Before investing, consider what information would reveal whether the business is progressing as expected. Agree on useful reporting and on the circumstances that would prompt a closer review. This creates a stronger starting point for oversight.
